The Human Rights Observatory site is designed to be the premier place in Belize that academics and justice advocates at the national and international level can access to support knowledge exchanges about justice barriers in Belize affecting LGBT Belizeans and other victims of violence and rights violations alike.

Our Human Rights Observatory is part of the United Belize Advocacy Movement (UniBAM) mandate to reduce discrimination. Our Human Rights Observatory manages over 456 cases of violence and violations. Its achievements over the past 10 years include:

  1. Production of human rights reports on LGBT and sex worker issues that were submitted to the Universal Periodic Report and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in 2009, 2013 and 2018 respectively.
  2. Provision of legal services that include litigation, legal advice, defence and mediation that impacted 50 cases between 2015-2021
  3. Provision of legal services to 22 L.G.B.T cases that include, litigation, legal advice, defence, and mediation that generated over $30,000 Belize in compensation to victims of rights violation.
  4. Production of five knowledge product that include and analysis of systemic violence, investigative advocacy, Justice barriers through a victim lens and policy barriers in policy affecting L.G.B.T Belizeans.
  5. The development of over 30 international partners to support our advocacy, legal concerns, and research needs.
  6. The production of a history of decriminalisation and resistance
  7. Transnational Advocacy at the United Nations, the Organization of American States, with the All-Party Parliamentarian Group, Human Rights Campaign Global Program and UK parliamentarians.
  8. Facilitation of resources to support reform for anti-discrimination and hate crime legislation
  9. Successfully challenging Belize Sodomy law that rendered unconstitutional in 2016 and reaffirm at the Belize Court of Appeals in 2019. A case, that was the first, to help launched the global mandate of Human Dignity Trust work on decriminalisation round the commonwealth.
  10. Advocacy engagement about economic inclusion and livelihoods with multilateral development institutions, the Equal Rights Coalition among others.

UniBAM is the oldest and only policy and advocacy LGBT led organization in the country that have transformed the political and culture institutions understanding of structure and systemic violence as it affects LGBT Belizeans.  When injustice is the law of the land, we must resist! The Observatory offers LGBT Belizeans the tool to resist as Belize’s redress system remains fundamentally weak. Until Old laws are revised, and new laws include protection for LGBT Belizeans, the Observatory will remain the strengthen our our advocacy.
